Autism Acceptance Week 2021

This week (29th March-2nd April) is usually classed as Autism Awareness Week. However, for many people who have ASD, this week can become a week of anxiety or unease due too the more negative side that raising awareness can bring. Many feel as though the traits of Autism and ASD is portrayed as a burden, or it’s seen as something to be feared, battled against or overcome.

People with Autism have the same talents, qualities and amazing abilities that everyone else has, often more so because they have a more unique view of the world than the “neurotypical” or “non-autistic”. They don’t need our pity or sympathy, they deserve our acceptance and respect.

So this year, Gryffe will be celebrating Autism Acceptance week!

This event is part of the #RedInstead campaign created by people with Autism because many feel awareness isn’t enough, we need to be accepting and respectful too. So this week is focussed on giving people with Autism time to tell us about Autism, and to remind us all of the wonderful talents and abilities people with Autism and ASD have.

We’ve put up posters in every classroom with a sentence or two about Autism that people with Autism feel it’s important for us to know.  These were created by a person with autism and if you’re looking for more resources please click the link here https://autisticnotweird.com

We’ve also attached 5 videos below, one for each day, about Autism (made by, or creating a platform for, people with Autism) and all pupils can access it whether they’re in school or doing online learning. Together we can learn about Autism from the people who know it best.
